The Children`s Department
The Shaker Library Children`s Rooms are exciting, busy places to visit. In a typical week, the Children`s Department sponsors a wide variety of programs for children ranging in age from babies through sixth grade. Offerings include a variety of story times; after school craft activities; creative writing; and book clubs, as well as special and seasonal events for the whole family. A monthly flyer listing our current offerings is available in the Children`s Room at each library. Or, click this link for

Both libraries offer an outstanding assortment of board books for babies; picture books for young children; `Ready`, `Set`, `Go` books for beginning readers; juvenile fiction, including special sections of fantasy, mystery, sports and series books; and a comprehensive non-fiction collection that includes recreational and research materials for children through grade eight.
Special collections at the Main Library include the Elaine "Boots" Fisher Collection of Newbery and Caldecott Medal and Honor books, the Coretta Scott King Collection, the Parenting Collection, and the Mentoring Collection. Both libraries also offer children`s books on tape and other audiovisual material; magazines for children; parenting and mentoring books and magazines on a variety of topics relating to child rearing and children with special needs.
Reading, learning and playing together at the library is a valuable family bonding experience. Snuggle up on a couch and share a story. Attend a family program; work on a puzzle; use our toys for gentle, imaginative play; browse the shelves, special collections, and holiday displays. Enjoy the educational games on our workstations, or explore the Internet together. Drop by the Play and Learn Station on the second floor of the Main Library with your preschooler.
